The four most underrated honeymoon destinations in Greece

Every trip is special, but if there is one trip that is truly unique in a person’s life, that’s his or her honeymoon trip because by definition, it is a trip that will only take place once. This means that it would have to be as memorable as possible and in order to ensure that any tri is unforgettable, one must first pick the right destination. It’s not too much to say that the destination is perhaps THE defining factor of any trip.

When it comes to honeymoon destinations, Greece is one of the most popular in the world. Hundreds of thousands of couples from all over the world choose this rather tiny Mediterranean country for their honeymoon trip each year because of its famous islands and its amazing beaches, after all destinations such as Mykonos and Santorini are among the most popular Greek honeymoon destinations in Europe. That however can be a problem.

If you would like to relax during your honeymoon trip then the most popular destinations in Greece might not be the right choice, especially during the months of summer when things get a little too hectic and crowded. It might be better to choose one of the following underrated honeymoon destinations in Greece.

Paros

This island is part of the Cyclades island complex and it is just like Mykonos and Santorini, just a little less crowded and expensive. It might not boast the caldera of Santorini or the extravagant night-life of Mykonos, but it is home to some of Greece’s most scenic and romantic villages as well as some of the country’s most beautiful beaches. Furthermore, it is close to the two aforementioned islands which means that you can easily island hop from there. If you are looking for a beautiful, but more laid-back destination, Paros is just right for you.

The Zagori villages

The word “Greece” makes everyone think about islands with white-washed houses and blue-domed churches, that’s not all the country has to offer though. Its mainland is just as beautiful. The Xagori villages in the Ipeiros district are situated amidst luscious forests and breath-taking mountainous landscapes. The houses in the villages are all built in a traditional style, making this one of the most scenic and idyllic places in all of Greece and the Balkans. So, if you and your significant other are not beach persons, then the Zagori villages or Zagorochoria are definitely perfect for you.

Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki or Salonica is Greece’s second largest city and it is also referred to as the capital of the Balkans. Hundreds of thousands of tourists visit the city each year, but it hasn’t caught on as a honeymoon destination, which is a shame considering that the Greeks refer to it as the city of love. Thessaloniki is a beautiful city with rich history and a unique atmosphere that makes it the most romantic city in Greece. It is also close to Khalkidhiki the most popular summer resort in mainland Greece, making it the ideal “base” for your excursions to Khalkidhiki’s gorgeous beaches. If you are looking for a more urban honeymoon, then Thessaloniki is definitely the right choice for you.

Khalkidhiki

Finally, we have Khalkidhiki. Although a famous destination for Greeks and people from countries around Greece, this amazingly beautiful area has not yet become a very popular international honeymoon destination, although it’s picking up traction, which means that honeymoon packages are still relatively cheap and easy to come by. What makes this district so special is the fact that it is home to the most beautiful beaches on the country’s mainland – all of which are accessible by car -, some of which rival even those found in the islands.
